Poor Man's Diving

Ok, I know it's not really diving, but I had to post this somewhere. My loving wife Suzy and I decided that I had to spend a weekend on land. So what is a dive junkie like me to do?? How about we go visit the Waikiki Aquarium!! Although fairly small, this was a great little aquarium. Most of the exhibits are geared towards the local Hawaiian water. This gave me a great chance for me to show Suzy a lot of the incredible wildlife up-close. We started the day by watching the feeding of the Hawaiian monk seal. What an incredible animal. There are an estimated 1500 left in the wild, and only 52 known to be around the island of Oahu. We spent just over an hour looking at all the exhibits. We got to see octopus, lobster, shrimp, eels, and jellyfish. One of the most incredible fish we got to see was the Weedy Seadragon from Australia. It looks like a weed floating in the currents, but it has the head like a seahorse. Well, after torturing Suzy with the constant "You should see these out there while scubaing", I took her to the Honolulu Zoo. With the zoo getting it's accreditation back in March, and the stories I heard from people that have visited before, I have to admit that I wasn't expecting much. Well this little zoo at the end of Waikiki Beach is an awesome little zoo! We started by seeing hundreds of different Hawaiian birds. Then it was the Galapagos turtles. If you think green sea turtles we see here in Hawaii are large you should see these monsters, they grow to over 500lbs and can live up to 150 years! Next up was the African safari area, with zebras, lions, hippos, and rhinos. So, if you’re visiting Hawaii, and have nothing to do while off gassing before your flight home, I highly recommend that you visit both off these Waikiki attractions.
